3D-Printed Bust or Figurine from a Photo

3D-Printed Bust or Figurine from a Photo

At some point you start thinking about a gift that isn't yet another book, bottle of wine, or floral arrangement. Something that speaks to a specific person. A custom 3D-printed bust — a small sculpture of you or the recipient, ranging from finger-size to half-meter tall — is exactly that kind of gift.

This article covers how the workflow runs, the practical size and material options, and what to expect on timeline and budget.

How a photo becomes a 3D model

The workflow is simpler than it might sound. You don't have to be a 3D modeler, don't need special software, and don't have to attend a scanning session. You send photos; we handle the rest.

Step 1 — Photos collected. We need 6–10 photos from different angles. The more, the better — profile shots (side views) are especially useful since they describe the nose, jaw line, and back of the head.

Step 2 — Sculpting the model. Our 3D sculptor opens the photos and builds a digital bust. It's hand-sculpted (combined with photo-measurement tools) — typically 4–12 hours depending on the level of detail you want.

Step 3 — Client review. We share an interactive 3D viewer (rotate, zoom in your browser) and renders from various angles. You comment: "the ears are too big," "the jaw should be squarer," "the side view of the nose isn't quite right." Usually 1–2 rounds of revisions.

Step 4 — Printing. Once the model is approved, the bust is printed in your chosen material and size.

Step 5 — Finishing. Sanding, primer, painting (if requested), base mounting, packaging.

What we look for in your photos

A good bust needs good source material. Some rules:

  • Good lighting. Natural daylight is best. Strong shadows on one side distort the facial features the sculptor sees.
  • Multiple angles. Front, profile from both sides, 45° angles left and right, slightly above, slightly below. 6–10 photos per person is a good minimum.
  • Neutral expression. A wide laugh deforms the face enough that the bust ends up looking unnatural. A normal smile or relaxed expression works better.
  • Sharp focus on the face. A blurry photo means a blurry model.
  • Simple background. Busy patterns confuse automated tools.

If you have an older photo with imperfect quality (a memorial bust, for example), we can still work — we'll set expectations before starting.

Sizes and material options

Two main parameters: size and material. Typical combinations:

Size Material Price Typical use
8–12 cm (desktop) Colored PLA €80–150 Desk souvenir, author gift
15–20 cm (shelf) PLA + painted €150–300 Anniversary, birthday, retirement gift
20–30 cm (centerpiece) Full-color resin (sandstone) €250–500 Photorealistic memorial, presentation
30–50 cm (large) PLA or PETG, painted €400–900 Statement gift, memorial object
Over 50 cm Multi-part assembly Custom quote Athlete trophy, symbolic figure

When choosing size, also think about where the bust will live. A desk holds 10 cm comfortably; a shelf 20 cm; a mantelpiece or office display 30+ cm.

Painting and finishing

A printed bust looks different depending on the finish:

  • Plain single-color PLA, no paint — simplest, looks like a plastic figure. Fine when aesthetic isn't the primary goal.
  • Sand and prime — removes layer lines, gives a clean surface. +€30–80.
  • Hand painting (acrylics) — realistic skin, hair, clothing colors. Artist hours, +€80–250.
  • Bronze or gold lacquer — classical sculpture look. +€50–150.
  • Full-color resin print (sandstone) — photorealistic color straight from the printer. More expensive but no paint pass needed.

Use cases we see regularly

A few common reasons clients order a bust:

  • Anniversary or milestone birthday. A personalized gift that isn't "just another thing."
  • Retirement. A boss or colleague whose 30-year career deserves a marker.
  • Athlete trophy. A club orders a bust of their competitor to mark a season highlight.
  • Memorial. A realistic bust of a loved one for the home or a memorial space.
  • Sales or presentation prop. An artist who sells custom work and needs a "demo" of their style.
  • Year-of-the-child marker. A child's face at a specific age, captured permanently.

Every case is personal. Tell us the story behind the gift — it helps us pick the right size, material, and finish.

Timeline and planning

A typical order takes 2–4 weeks from input photos to finished bust:

  • Week 1 — Sculpting and revisions.
  • Week 2 — Printing.
  • Week 3 (when needed) — Hand painting.
  • Week 4 — Packaging and shipping.

If the gift date is fixed (birthday, anniversary), order at least 4 weeks ahead. Rush orders (under 2 weeks) are possible but the price goes up 20–40%.

During holiday periods (Christmas, Mother's/Father's Day) demand spikes — order 6 weeks ahead when possible.

Pricing overview

A typical bust order breaks down approximately:

  • Modeling from photos: €100–300 (depends on photo count and detail level).
  • Printing: €50–250 (depends on size and material).
  • Finishing: €0–250 (sanding, painting, lacquering — optional).
  • Base, packaging, shipping: €20–60.

Total for a small gift bust ranges from €150 to €800 for a typical order. See the pricing guide for more.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also do dog or cat busts?

Yes, pet busts are popular. The workflow is identical — we need 6–10 photos of the pet from different angles. Profile shots are especially important to capture nose and ear shape.

Can a single bust feature multiple people?

Yes — couple busts (for a wedding anniversary, for example) work well. Each person needs their own photo set. Price is roughly 1.5–2× a single bust.

Can you do a full-body figure, not just a bust?

Yes, but it takes more time and so costs more. A 25 cm full-body figurine takes 12–20 hours to model (vs. 4–12 hours for a bust).

What if my photo is black-and-white or very old?

We can still work. Color choices (hair, eyes) we'd capture in a separate conversation. Older photos may leave some nuance missing — we'll set expectations before confirming.

How is shipping handled for bigger busts?

Anything over 30 cm ships in custom-cut foam packaging. Shipping risk is minimal; for high-value orders we recommend insurance as well.

Summary

A 3D-printed bust from a photo is a gift that tells a story — about a specific person, moment, or relationship. It works best when:

  • You want something personal, not generic.
  • You have good photos of the subject from different angles.
  • The gift date isn't tomorrow — order 4+ weeks ahead.

Start with a consultation request and send a few photos via the contact form — we'll give you an initial estimate quickly.
